I. What Is a Color Masterbatch?
A color masterbatch is a concentrated pigment formulation made by dispersing high levels of pigments or dyes into a polymer resin carrier. It delivers stronger tinting strength compared to raw pigments.
II. Basic Components
· Pigments/Dyes: Provide color. Organic types offer vivid hues; inorganic types provide opacity and weather resistance.
· Carrier: The same resin as the end product to ensure compatibility.
· Dispersant: Ensures even pigment distribution and prevents agglomeration.
· Additives: Optional, depending on specific needs (e.g., flame retardants, brighteners).
III. Classification & Grades
By Carrier: PE, PP, ABS, PVC, etc.
By Application: Injection molding, blow molding, spinning, etc.
Common Grades:
· High-grade: For cosmetic packaging, toys, appliance housings, ultra-thin products.
· Standard: For daily necessities, industrial containers, general packaging.
· Spinning grade: For textile fibers; requires fine particles, high heat/light resistance.
· Low-grade: For products with low color requirements (e.g., trash cans).
Special-purpose vs. Universal:
· Special-purpose: Carrier matches the product resin → best compatibility and color quality.
· Universal: Uses a single carrier (e.g., low-melting PE) for multiple resins → convenient but lower performance.
IV. Advantages
· Uniform dispersion – no color spots
· Consistent color – accurate dosing, stable results
· Pigment protection – prevents oxidation and moisture absorption
· Clean & safe – no pigment dust, operator friendly
· Efficient – quick color changes, less cleaning
· Energy-saving – coloring and processing in one step
